The Seventh All Karnataka Don Bosco Youth Meet began at Don Bosco, Tumkur, on 26 April 2012. The three-day youth convention has as its theme, ‘Youth for a Better World’. Nearly five hundred youth and staff members from 35 centres across Karnataka are participating in the programme.
“Youth has the tremendous potential to rewrite the human history and transform the world”, said Fr. CP. Varghese, giving the keynote address at the inaugural function of the youth meet at 9.30 am on 27 March 2012. Inaugurating the function, Fr. KO Thomas (Vice Provincial, Sacred Heart Province Bangalore) exhorted the participants to let change and transformation spring up from their inner core and spread across the society, the nation, and the world. The Chief Guest, Mr R. Natarajan (Zonal Director, Nehru Yuva Kendra) enlightened the gathering about the National Youth Policy of the Government and exhorted the participants to come out with an action plan which could be integrated into the National Youth Policy for the current year. Mrs Jacintha D’ Souza (Coordinator, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Tumkur) reminded the participants that their future grows out of their own hands. Fr. Joy Nedumparambil (Regional Coordinator, DB Tech, Bosco South) said that anyone who stepped into Don Bosco Institutions is a friend of Don Bosco for a lifetime.
In the afternoon, the participants took to the streets of Tumkur city, demanding their rights. The walkathon flagged off in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner concluded with the submission of a memorandum to Sri. V. Doddappa (Additional Deputy Commissioner, Tumkur). The memorandum demands equal rights and opportunities for all the youth, provision of incentives and projects for indigenous people to pursue studies and find jobs locally, allocation of youth centres equipped with library, playground and recreational facilities in rural areas, prevention of brain drain from the country to other countries and sufficient budgetary provisions for youth empowerment and development.
“If the youth of our country unite for the cause of nation building, the exorbitant internal security costs could be cut down drastically,” said Sri. Doddappa, in reply to the submission of the memorandum. He assured the gathering that the memorandum would be forwarded to the office of the Governor immediately with due recommendation.
The youth meet, jointly organized by Don Bosco Youth Services, Karnataka and DB Tech (Bosco South) and participated in by some groups of the Salesian Family, such as FMA and MSMHC, will conclude on Sunday, 29 April.
